The potential of PV roofs in Switzerland

In Switzerland, more than half of the 9.6 million roofs could be used for the installation of photovoltaic panels. This would ensure more than

40% of the annual electricity demand, according to EPFL researchers.

The study indicates that 55% of the total surface area of Swiss roofs is suitable for the installation of photovoltaic solar panels. By exploiting only those areas that are mainly south-facing, this could meet more than 40 % of the current annual national electricity demand.

At present, only one tenth of the photovoltaic potential is realised: 90 % of this potential still remains to be exploited.
