III-V solar cell with six photo-active layers and 39% efficiency with sunlight

Americans at NREL have developed a III-V solar cell with six photo-active layers. Each

captures a specific part of the solar spectrum and has six junctions. An efficiency of 47.1% has been achieved with a concentration of 143 suns.

Under a single sun, the efficiency rate was 39.2 %. The previous record has been jointly held since 2014 by Soitec, CEA-Leti and Fraunhofer with 46%.
