The storage market in Germany

The German market achieved a turnover of €5.5 billion in 2019, with 13,300 employees. It grew by 10% compared to 2018.

Storage in industry and commerce

is increasingly used for uninterruptible power supply, emergency power supply, peak load management, optimisation of production processes, or for decarbonisation and sector coupling. It is the second most important sales motive with €1.3 billion.

The demand for heat storage is rising sharply. These are the first effects of the comingCO2 price in the industrial sector. Thermal energy storage" is continuing and is being boosted by increasingly widespread applications of heat storage.

The growth of the home storage market is still very strong. Its growth is accelerated by electric mobility. Energy storage technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the flexibility of mobility infrastructures, particularly in providing rapid recharging of electric vehicles.

The development of storage in Germany is hampered by outdated regulatory frameworks. As a result, shops are considered as consumers. In addition, approval procedures are lengthy and the conditions for connecting to the grid with measurement and billing concepts are impractical. There is also a general lack of transparency in the applicable regulations. Professionals are campaigning for storage to be considered as the fourth pillar of the energy system.

The demand for green hydrogen is increasing. It is supported by the strong demand from industrial users for a low-carbon energy supply. However, gas conversion technologies are not yet used on an industrial scale. Regulations hinder the wide and user-friendly use of hydrogen energy storage devices and capacitors.
