Canadian Solar Announces 23.8% Panel Efficiency
multi-Si type n; this is certified by a German institute.
The cell, which measures 157 mm x 157 mm (246.44 cm²), uses an n-type P5 silicon wafer and PASCon technology (passivated contact). The company does not indicate how it achieved a 1% increase in efficiency in six months (compared to its last record of September 2019). Six months ago, the company reported using mono or near-mono moulded cells. Mono cast wafers are less sensitive to recombination by boron-oxygen defects. In addition, their advantage is the lower light-induced degradation.

Editor's note While monocrystalline panels seemed set to supplant multicrystalline panels, Canadian Solar says there is still room for improvement on a product that seemed to be outdated. It remains to be seen whether production costs are low enough to compete with monocrystalline products.
