Association for the development of solid-state batteries
Mercedes-Benz partners with Hydro-Québec to develop market-ready solid-state batteries. The Canadian is conducting research
on such batteries since 1990. The German company will use the batteries in its electric vehicles. Researchers want to test new materials under normal conditions of use.
Solid-state batteries are seen as the next major technological leap for electric mobility. They would be an alternative to today's lithium-ion battery systems. They offer a potentially higher energy density (at least 400 Wh/litre), more cycles, a reduced degradation rate and less weight. Development is mainly driven by car manufacturers. They should be cheaper because they do not use cobalt.
