Launch of the European Battery Alliance

The European Union authorises the creation of the European Battery Alliance

Seven European States will contribute 3.2 billion euros to this European project, to which will be added

5 billion of private funds. The countries concerned are Belgium with €30m, Finland, France with €960m, Germany with €1,250m, Italy with €570m, Poland €240m and Sweden €50m.

Since last year, the European Commission has been developing a strategic action plan for the European Battery Alliance which focuses on four main areas: raw and advanced materials, battery cells and modules, battery systems and recycling, and refining.

Editor's note It is obvious that a battery industry is indispensable for Europe. One is needed to supply the electric vehicles which are announced to be numerous in a few years time.

We are constantly taking the example of aeronautics, by wanting to apply its current scheme to that of the battery. It is forgetting that the first projects were launched by the French. From this embryo, the tasks were extended to other European industrialists during discussions between States. This was done at the same time as aeronautical activity was increasing. There was therefore more and more work that could be shared out.

In the case of the battery industry, the process of extending the aeronautics activity began where it ended, with discussions between States, but without relying on the industrialists who would have the heavy task of implementing the studies or production. Politicians see the broad outlines but not the practical details. They are going to pick and choose the responsibilities but not the daily tasks.

While we cannot be optimistic about the implementation of this project, a new event has taken place in recent weeks, the willingness of the President of the European Union to put the Green Plan at the centre of her action. Will this change the situation?
