Mitsubishi acquires Dutch electricity company Eneco

Japan's Mitsubishi to acquire Dutch electricity company Eneco for €4.1 billion Eneco is the second largest supplier of electricity in the world.

in the Netherlands. This company is also active in Germany and Belgium. It operates a wind power capacity of around 2 gigawatts, about a quarter of which is offshore, and almost 300 megawatts of solar power. Offshore wind energy is the focus of an existing collaboration between Eneco and Mitsubishi since 2012, with numerous auctions of offshore wind energy to be held in Europe over the next two years.

Editor's note There are two consequences to this takeover: wind power installations and more generally renewable energies will multiply with the Japanese's financial resources. The other consequence is that the Japanese will come to distribute energy. The Netherlands is at the centre of Europe. Hence it would not be surprising if the Asian intends to act like an oil stain. After having put a foot in energy distribution, it could take an interest in German, Belgian and why not French companies, since the whole European energy sector is in the process of rebuilding itself.

Eneco was split in February 2017: on the one hand there was the network activity Stedin Holding NV, and on the other hand the energy production and supply company Eneco Groep NV, in accordance with the European laws on unbundling. The municipalities have prepared to sell their participations.

Eneco retains electricity and gas production subsidiaries, Oxxio and Lichtblick, based in Hamburg, Woonenergie, a renewable energy supplier, a smart metering and large data company and a clean energy agricultural company, AgroEnergy.
