World record low price in Portugal at 0.1476 €/ kWh (0.016 $)

The auction in Portugal led to a world price record: the French Akuo Energy (370 MW) and the Spanish Iberdrola obtained half of the 1.15 GW allocated. The 150 MW Akuo project set a world record with a price of €0.01476 per MWh ($0.016).

At the PV auction in Portugal, Neoen obtains the construction of 50 MW north of Lisbon, with a price of €0.02347 per kWh. Construction would start in 2021 and the plant would be operational in early 2022.

In liberalised markets, investors increasingly value sources of income other than those secured through competitive auctions. Taking the risk of the trader, before, during or after obtaining the purchase price becomes the norm. This creates new risks and opportunities.

According to Neoen's deputy finance manager, builders need to be wary of the "critical bottleneck" of solar energy in the United States. We haven't yet found a common view on how to manage the long-term risks for retailers," he adds.
